Center for Public Genomics: Cores

Core 1: Management and Organization

Core 1 is responsible for the overall management for the Center, administrative support, communication, and coordination of work. This includes an annual gathering of a national advisory committee and submission of non-competing grant renewal applications. In addition, this core provides research on ethical and economic issues to support the work of the other projects.

Core 2: Analytical Resources and Linkages to Duke Genomics

Core 2 provides the Center access to relevant genomic databases, personnel, genomic technologies, and other resources. This core maintains several unique data sets, including a table of government and nonprofit genomics research funding sources, and a list of genomics firms, including data on R&D expenditure and market valuation. In addition, the Core 2 Fellow helps coordinate research efforts to assist the various projects.

Core 3: DNA Patent Database

LeRoy Walters, PhD (Core PI) - Department of Philosophy, Georgetown University.

The DNA Patent Database, (DPD), serves as a resource for the other projects and cores of the Center for Public Genomics as well as for members of the public interested in fields like genomics, genetics and biotechnology. The DPD identifies a set of DNA-based patents issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and makes the full-text versions of such patents available at no cost to the public. This searchable database allows researchers to track data or trends of granted patents in categories such as the date of issue, the inventor or the receipt of government funding.

The DNA Patent Database is maintained at Georgetown University.
