Business and research databases
Compendia of the Science and Engineering Statistics is supported by the National Science Foundation. It collects statistics on science and engineering, including research funding. No subscription or registration is required.
CRISP (Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects) is a database of federally funded biomedical research projects. It is maintained by the office of Extramural Research at the National Institutes of Health. No subscription or registration is required.
EDGAR database of the Securities and Exchange Commission contains annual reports with information relevant for investors, including background documents, details about business deals relevant to market valuation and business plans. No registration or subscription is required.
Legal databases
Lexis/Nexis allows searches of newspapers, magazines, unpublished papers and legal documents across all fields. Registration and subscription required.
LitAlert is a database for researching litigation on US patent and trademarks. It includes records of IP lawsuits filed in the 94 US District Courts since 1973, as reported to the Commissioner of the US Patent and Trademark Office. Registration and subscription are required.
Westlaw is an online research tool that is used primarily by legal professionals. It covers over 23,000 databases on case law, codes, statutes, public records and law journals, among other data sources. Registration and subscription are required.
Literature databases
Kennedy Institute of Ethics Library & Information Services provides links to bioethics online bibliographies and catalogues, international bioethics organizations, and bioethics syllabi. The Kennedy Institute is located at Georgetown University. No registration or subscription is required.
PubMed provides access to MEDLINE database for biomedical research articles and articles in related fields. The National Library of Medicine at the NIH offers this service, and while links to some articles require subscriptions, many of the articles and abstracts are provided free online. No registration is required.
SCOPUS is an online database for abstract and citations of 15,000 peer-reviewed journals in the science, technical and medical fields. Elsevier and several university libraries jointly provide this research tool. Registration and subscription are required.
Web of Science is an academic database that provides access to Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citations Index, Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Index Chemicus and Current Chemical Reactions. Provided by Thomson Scientific, this database covers 8,700 journals. Registration and subscription are required.
Patent databases
CAMBIA is a database that has information on special collections such as DNA sequence patents. No registration or subscription is required.
Delphion provides US, European, Japanese, German, UNPADOC and PCT data on patents and patent applications. Registration is required, and advanced searches require a subscription.
DNA Patent Database contains USPTO records of DNA-based patents and patent applications. The database is supported by ELSI, NIH, Office of Science, US Department of Energy and the National Human Genome Research Institute. No registration or subscription is required.
Google Patents is Google’s search engine for over seven million patents worldwide. No subscription or registration is required.
USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) is part of the US Department of Commerce. The USPTO processes patent and trademark applications and disseminates patent and trademark information. In addition, it maintains a database of current patents, inventors and trademarks. No registration or subscription is required.
