Phillip Febbo, MD
Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Oncology
"Genomics allows a comprehensive molecular description of each patient' s disease."Phillip Febbo, a Damon Runyon-Lilly Clinical Investigator, joined the IGSP in 2004, and also serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Febbo received his MD degree at the University of California, San Francisco and subsequently completed Internal Medicine Residency at the Brigham and Women' s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. After his fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, he was on staff within the Genitourinary Oncology Center at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and a fellow within the laboratory of Dr. Todd Golub at the Dana Farber as well as the Whitehead Institute Center for Genomic Research where he focused on applying genomic technologies to better understanding the biology and clinical behavior of prostate cancer.
During this time, his work demonstrated that the expression of 5 genes can be used to predict the recurrence of prostate cancer following surgery and published these findings in the March 2002 issue of Cancer Cell. Since then, his research has validated the preliminary on two independent sets of tumors from Washington University in Saint Louis and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. This finding, which parallels that of Drs. Joe Nevins and Mike West in breast cancer, demonstrates that DNA microarrays (or DNA chips) can sensitively and broadly detect variation in genetic expression and thereby monitor cellular biology. Dr. Febbo is currently testing the model in the setting of a national, prospective trial through a cooperative cancer group and working to adapt this and similar models for clinical application and this work is partially supported by grants from the American Society for Clinical Oncology and the National Cancer Institute.
